Hon. Judge James STEADMAN, M. L. C., for New Brunswick, son of Willam and Hannah Tatro (Couch) STEADMAN, was born March 27, 1818.

Source from Resurgo, The Histroy of Moncton, Volume 1, 1990 by Pincombe and Larracey, page 116 reports him to be the son of William STEADMAN. He became an attorney, entered politics and was the first native son of the Bend to enter Cabinet at Fredericton and later was called to the Bench. Page 204; As a member of the provincial legislature he introduced the bill requesting the incorporation after first seeking leave to introduce "a bill to incorporate that part of the Parish of Moncton (sic) known as The Bend for the Petitcodiac as a city or town."

Source from The First Hundred, by E.W. Larracey, 1970, page 213. "William STEADMAN's son, James STEADMAN, was mayor of Moncton in 1860 when he was called to Frederickton to become postmaster general of the province".

Source from page 70 of The Monctonians, by John Edward Belliveau, 1981. James who would be the first native born son of the Bend to become a member of the provincial cabinet, owned other property. James went into politics and was elected to the legislature. Later he became a judge and previously he had been postmater-general of NB having been mayor of The Bend. He completed the term of Joseph Crandall who was forced from the legislature. When Syeadman was made postmaster-general of the colony (NB was not yet a part of Canada and had its own postal system) he moved to Fredericton. He made it just as Moncton was collapsing as a ship building centre.

Source from the 1851 Moncton Census which reports James to be 33 years of age, English, a lawyer, born in NB and living with his wife Julian.
